Flash was chosen as the medium for this piece to be created in because it is widely available on over 90% of computers worldwide. It also allows for a lot of interactivity and there are many resources to help you achieve the end result you require.

Most of my research was done online using flash resources to find a simple actionscript for getting a flying man character to travel through a horizontal scrolling landscape. It took a long time to find an appropriate, simple to adapt script.
